Roles and responsibilities

Faculty members are the primary stakeholders of the institute. The institute attains new heights only if its faculty strives for greater heights, sets high targets for itself and the staff and students, while treating them professionally and with respect. Faculty members are expected to meet their professional and institutional commitments at IIT Delhi throughout their tenure. They should remain aware of the rules and regulations and conduct rules . Also note the social media guidelines of the government: https://www.meity.gov.in/writereaddata/files/Approved%20Social%20Media%20Framework%20and%20Guidelines%20_2_.pdf.

Faculty members often have a decisive say in purchasing, hiring and other decision. It is critical for faculty to be acutely aware of their responsibility as chaperones of public trust and to make fair decisions and recuse themselves in cases of potential conflicts of interest (http://estb.iitd.ac.in/RulePosition/Faculty/Conflict.pdf ). See Institute Conduct Rules here.

The main roles of faculty include teaching, research, and service.

Teaching and Research

Teaching and research are two main roles of IIT Delhi faculty. These roles include classroom teaching and research supervision. They involve publishing in top international venues in each faculty member’s area of research. They also involve raising funds to support major research expenses. This relates to building, managing, and augmenting advanced research facilities, which attract other researchers and collaborators. This also relates to producing solutions to pressing local and national problems through research and development. In addition, faculty members are expected to act as mentors and role models for students, junior faculty members, and post-doctoral fellows.

Service

Each academic unit is managed mainly by its faculty. So is the institute at some level. This requires service in many committees (some referenced in this document like SRC and DRC). Some committees have academic objectives, others are administrative. Many institute level committees of professors are constantly evaluating and evolving policies, some of which is in response to missives from the government. Although more experienced faculty carry greater of such load, the entire faculty is expected to share in it (and build experience so they may carry a larger load as they gain that experience). Beyond the institute, faculty members also play a leadership role in research communities as editors of journals, chairs of conferences and national committees to chart research and policy directions.

It is important to remember that even on leave we remain members of IIT Delhi faculty and must carry that role. The other thing to note is that there is no concept of “moonlighting” we are only IIT Delhi faculty. Full-time. All the time. This means any compensation by an outside agent for our time and expertise is officially earned as a faculty member of IIT Delhi (except when on leave without pay). These are either paid through the institute or otherwise declared to the institute (and the institute receives a fraction of that compensation depending on the annual amount (ssee http://estb.iitd.ac.in/RulePosition/Faculty/Honorarium.pdf for rules.)
