IIT Delhi hosts Nano India 2017

The two day Nano Mission's national level meet Nano India 2017 began at IIT Delhi on March 15.

This biennial National Conference is supported by the Department of Science & Technology (DST). The event was inaugurated by eminent scientist Bharat Ratna Prof. C N R Rao.

After the inauguration, the Nanoscience and Technology Research Awards were given.

Welcoming the delegates IIT Delhi director Prof. Ramgopal Rao said that the Nano Mission had come a long way and symposiums like these played a pivotal role in showcasing the current work in this field.

Delivering his plenary address Prof. C N R Rao said that there had been a tremendous growth in this area. "It is not easy to do great science. But at the same time it is not difficult also. It simply needs a lot of effort," he said.

Prof. C N R Rao emphasized that there was a need to give long term grants to groups of people. He then gave a presentation on the topic Photochemical, Thermochemical and Electrochemical splitting of water.

Artificial photosynthesis is a promising method for producing renewable energy by use of sun light, he said adding: "Artificial photosynthesis employing the modified Z scheme of natural photosynthesis can be exploited both for oxidation and reduction of water.”

Besides lectures and presentations from leading scientists on diverse topics in Nanomaterials, Nano sensors, Nano medicine, Nano devices and Nano electronics there were poster sessions and industry interactions also.

Among the various speakers on the inaugural day, Arindam Ghosh spoke on the New Applications of Van der Waals Solids in Electronics and Optoelectronics and Ranjani Viswanatha spoke on Surface and Bulk Electronics Structure of Semiconductor Nanocrystals using Copper as a Nano sensor.

Nano technology is a knowledge-intensive and enabling technology which is expected to influence a wide range of products and processes with far-reaching implications for national economy and development. The conference is aimed to bringing together experts from universities, laboratories and industries across the country to promote exchange of ideas and to create a platform for collaborative research in interdisciplinary areas of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology.

The Government of India had approved the launch of a Mission on Nano Science and Technology (Nano Mission) with an allocation of Rs. 1000 crore for 5 years in 2007. Capacity-building in this upcoming area of research will be of utmost importance for the Nano Mission so that India emerges as a global knowledge-hub in this field. For this, research on fundamental aspects of Nano Science and training of large number of manpower will receive prime attention.

The Nano Mission will strive for development of products and processes for national development, especially in areas of national relevance like safe drinking water, materials development, sensors development, drug delivery, etc. For this, it will forge linkages between educational and research institutions and industry and promote Public Private Partnerships.
